Why OASiS?
Anterior segment care has never had a dedicated professional and intellectual home. OASiS was created to build one.
Anterior segment care has traditionally been organized around isolated disease categories — dry eye, corneal disease, blepharitis, contact lenses, uveitis. Each has its own conferences, its own industry relationships, its own educational ecosystem. But patients do not experience these as separate conditions. The anterior segment functions as one interconnected biological and clinical system. A clinician who understands only one corner of the territory cannot fully serve the patient who lives in all of it.
OASiS was created to organize around the territory, not around isolated diseases, technologies, products, or commercial categories. The Society exists to help clinicians understand, navigate, and advance the anterior segment as a whole.
Every major clinical discipline has a professional society that serves as its intellectual center — a place where the science is organized, the standards are set, and the community gathers. Anterior segment optometry has never had one. OASiS fills that gap.
Organizing around territory rather than isolated diseases allows clinicians to understand the connections between conditions — how dry eye relates to blepharitis, how inflammation connects to corneal disease, how contact lens complications intersect with ocular surface health. The territory is the curriculum.
Professional school prepares graduates to begin. It cannot teach everything a clinician will need across an entire career. The anterior segment is advancing rapidly — new therapeutics, new imaging modalities, new understanding of disease mechanisms. Lifelong learning is not optional. It is the professional obligation.
Anterior segment optometry is a distinct clinical discipline. It deserves its own professional identity — its own standards, its own scholarship, its own community. OASiS exists to give that identity a permanent institutional home.
The anterior segment needs its own peer-reviewed voice. Clinical reviews, consensus statements, white papers, and position statements that reflect the Society's scientific standards — not commercial interests. OASiS will build that publishing infrastructure.
Clinical images are among the most powerful educational tools in medicine. A curated, annotated archive of anterior segment clinical science — organized by anatomy, diagnosis, imaging modality, and treatment — is an institutional asset that grows in value over time. The Atlas is being built to last.
The future of anterior segment optometry is being trained right now. Students and residents who connect with OASiS early will carry its standards, its community, and its intellectual culture into their careers. The Society's investment in the next generation is an investment in the profession's future.
Industry advances the tools, therapeutics, and technologies that clinicians use every day. That relationship is valuable — and it requires careful stewardship. OASiS will never attempt to replace, compete with, or diminish the important work of the American Optometric Association, state optometric associations, regional optometric societies, or local optometric societies. These organizations perform indispensable work through advocacy, licensure, legislative representation, regulation, public policy, governance, and professional protection. OASiS respects these boundaries. Our mission is different. Organized optometry protects and represents the profession. OASiS advances and connects the clinician. The relationship is complementary, not competitive.
